Children present library petition
Posted: 28th January 2019Children took their concerns over potential library closures to the top.
Pupils at Cooks Spinney Primary Academy regularly use the library at Mark Hall which is near to their school.
With the recent threat that libraries in Essex could close, pupils decided to fight back and launch a petition.
When interviewing Harlow MP Robert Halfon on the subject for school newspaper the Spinney Star, pupils asked how they could make their views known.
Gary Cansell, director of primary English for the BMAT group of schools, said: “The whole point of young people coming to school is so that they can become active members of the community and the wider world. The world does not just happen to them, they can change things. If you give children the sense they can do something and that they are powerful, that is the biggest thing to come away from this, even if it achieves nothing else.”
Pupils delivered their petition – including the signature of children’s favourite author Michael Rosen who visited the school – to Essex County Council members Kevin Bentley and Susan Barker at County Hall, in Chelmsford.
Year 6 May said: “I prefer reading books because if you watch a film or are on a computer it shows you pictures, but in a book you can imagine it for yourself.”
