Social Studies
Pupils in Years 5 and 6 at Cooks Spinney have Social Studies included in their curriculum.
Why is the teaching of Social Studies important to Cooks Spinney's pupils?
We beleive it is important to help Cooks Spinney pupils develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society. With this in mind, we have developed two units of work to support our pupils' knowledge and understanding of key social factors influencing our world.
Year 5 Social Studies
Year 5 pupils will study Civil Rights in the context of Black History. Pupils will explore what civil rights are and how groups and individuals campaigned to gain them.
Year 6 Social Studies
Year 6 pupils will study Refugees and Migrants. Pupils will learn the reasons why people may become refugees and have to flee their homes including war or persecution. Pupils will also study human migration and consider the factors influencing people to move around the globe using examples from the past and present.
